The types of modality, based on the distinction between deontic and epistemic modalities, are discussed in terms of the modal and mood systems , considering the semantic and pragmatic dimensions of the context. The English modal verbs, phrases and idioms occur with many degrees of intensity and shades of meaning cleared up by the discourse context. The modalled idioms are grouped according to the modal verbs they include... Mood and modality are interchangeable in the same context. Stress is laid on the modal concepts expressed by the modal verbs and moods, as well as on the differences between factual and theoretical meaning, on the one hand, and between these two types of meaning and the hypothetical meaning, on the other... A comparative -contrastive approach of these types of meaning will clear up these differences.
