The Phrasal Verb is addressed to two types of readers: on the one hand. Section I is focused on the needs of the students having a command of English ranging from upper-intermediate to advanced level, who are keen on enhancing their abilities in the complex and sometimes difficult field of the phrasal verbs; on the other hand, Section II offers a more refined approach to the same topic, providing also a more linguistically-biased perspective on the phenomenon, which could best serve university students interested in developing their abilities to cope with difficult syntactic and semantic problems related to the phrasal verbs.
Well documented and up to date, this book can also prove to be a useful tool in the hands of those students trying to develop a topic for a diploma paper in linguistics, while the dictionaries and appendices at the end of Section II constitute a handy instrument for anyone trying to span the field of the phrasal verb.
Section I provides the main patterns in which the phrasal verb can occur, legitimised by common usage. It is divided into nine parts, each followed by sets of exercises constructed according to different formats and different levels of difficulty (which are indicated by the asterisks): filling in the blanks, giving lexical equivalents, finding nominalized forms, composition exercises, word order exercises, pronominalization tests, etc. The key to the exercises allows the students a self-assessment of their linguistic skills and abilities in this area.
For those who already possess the necessary skills or have acquired them through solving the exercises in Section I, Section II also introduces less common, yet correct phrasal constructions, according to the same classifications used in Section I. This division is meant to enable the reader to move freely from the classic patterns in one type of phrasal verbs (Section I) to the more refined structures possible within the same type, which are to be found in the second part of the book. This second part contains bibliographic references by reputed linguists, which constitute the scientific basis of our approach, but which could equally provide some valuable guidelines for further reading, in the interest of all those students committed to an extensive exploring of this area of research.
